Kawazu Tobi Komu

古池や furuike ya an ancient pond
蛙飛び込む kawazu tobikomu a frog leaps in
水の音 mizu no oto the sound of water

The sound wasn’t working when embedding the video for some reason. I was embedding from our site, but I’ll try Youtube for a while. Interestingly, Youtube only has 24 views but it has 4 five [...]

My Deadly Friend, Corn

Alrighty now, it is decided. I will take a huge leap toward maturity by learning the correct way to say ‘corn’ in Japanese.
For years I have called corn tomo koroshi (友殺し) around my wife and simply ko-n (コーン) to everyone else.
One fine evening:
Yumi: 今夜、何が食べたい?konya, nani ga tabetai? What do you want to eat tonight?
Clay: [...]

This is the highly prized アリが父ちゃん search phrase. Yes, ‘An ant is my father’ in Japanese leads people directly here. Or actually directly here.
* Actually, [...]

宅急便誠 Makoto on the Go

Makoto helping out with orders

蛸s = Octopi?

We were watching Makoto’s Wiggles DVD (highly recommended BTW) and when mentioning Henry the Octopus’ friends they repeatedly said Octopi as the plural of Octopus. I hadn’t heard that before and since I happened to be reading from the Fowler’s Modern English Usage I decided to turn to the O section, then OC, then [...]

春のワルツ

A few years ago, 2004 I think, TV Japan played a Korean Drama called 冬のソナタ (Winter Sonata). You may have seen it as it was super popular in Japan. I remember seeing the face of ヨンさま (the star) everywhere in Japan. He was on the walls of supermarkets advertising some new-fangled ointment [...]
