Coffee and Donuts (ミスド)
Apparently coffee has soluble fiber, more antioxidants than blueberries and regular drinkers have a lower risk of heart disease.
This is good news for Japan.
When you think of coffee in Japan, nay, when you think of Bottomless cups of American Coffee* in Japan, only one thing comes to mind - Mister Donut.
ミスタードーナツ (often abbreviated as ミスド) is found everywhere in Japan. With 1,303 stores, there are reportedly ミスド stores under large rocks in front of a few unsuspecting Starbucks.**
Horrors! In Kyoto station, you cannot buy coffee at the Mister Donut. They only sell donuts. You may call it a vast coffee conspiracy, but I suspect the reason is the mini-store next door is the New Orleans style Cafe du Monde. I’m sorry, but Chicory just tastes awful. Thankfully they also have ‘real’ coffee, but that still doesn’t make up for the lack of bottomless cups of American coffee.

Now for my second cup of Joe…

* アメリカンコーヒー is their specialty. ‘American Coffee’ simply means watered down coffee. It is currently 262 yen (including tax) AND you can go back for おかわり - refills - as many times as your system can handle the caffeine.
** Unconfirmed.
