Opening and Closing Kanji in Japanese

We all open things and from time to time, we all close things. It could be a door, a book, or the oft-difficult-to-close object—our own mouths.
Working on a different project I came to this sentence:
この店(みせ)は、夜(よる)10時(じゅうじ)に閉(し)まります。
(This store closes at 10 at night.)
It reminded me of a mnemonic I created years ago when I was learning [...]

Hotmail and HTML and Wordpress

First, Gary, if you are reading this, I promise I won’t use your name below. No one will know you were the protagonist in the story.

This morning a (anonymous) friend had a question about embedding a Youtube video into his Wordpress blog. I set it up for him and gave him brief instructions [...]

Rocking Makoto to Sleep

Last night during supper (around 6:30 PM) we noticed Makoto nodding occasionally.  He was all tuckered-out.
So after eating, I picked him up and walked around the house for twenty minutes until he fell asleep.  It was very 懐かしい (natsukashii nostalgic).  I used to put Makoto to sleep all the time that way when he was [...]

New Items in the (Free) Downloads Section

I just added four or five new freebies in the downloads section.
One PDF includes the first 1000 or so kanji (in JLPT order I believe) and the rest are kanji for the JLPT levels (Except level 1).  All PDFs have readings, meanings, and several example jukugo listed.  The only problem is these were made before [...]

Body Parts in Japanese Video: The Head

I recently had Yumi record a few body part vocabulary words. It ended up as a page at TJP (here). Today, having a little extra time, I threw it together as a video:

Makoto, the Dogs, and Barking in General

At dusk a few days back, the dogs were barking with (at) the neighbor dog.  Usually when it starts to get dark the dogs (and the two-year-old boy) get excited for some reason; perhaps they realize it is the day’s last hurrah before bed.
So they were barking.  Yumi called them in with an 「おかし!」 (okashi [...]

Casio XD-GW9600 Setup Menu Pictures

A customer sent me a few pictures of his GW9600 setup menu screens and asked for a quick translation. If you have a Casio XD-GW9600 and have questions about what the menu is asking, you can download all 22 pictures here.
The ‘translations’ are very simple (I’m pretty tired too!) but they look like this:
I’m [...]

Manga University’s Brand New Yojijukugo Book

Manga University has done it again. These guys are great at making Japanese (even difficult to remember yoji jukugo) seem easy.
Most of their goodies are really for beginners.  This book contains no romaji (yeah!) and is really for upper beginners and intermediates.  Beginners can enjoy it provided they have hiragana down well.
Yojijukugo (四字熟語) are [...]

A CEO Who Loves Sushi

If you want to learn very useful Sushi related words, you should consider getting his book:

BTW, you should check out Hulu.com. Tons of ad-supported (free to the viewer) television shows, clips, and even full length movies. Looks very promising.

White Rabbit Press’ Kanji Flashcards Volume One

For months White Rabbit Press had been out of the Volume One of their extremely popular Japanese kanji flashcards. Volume One covers all kanji needed for levels 3 and 4 (the easiest) of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test. We finally got our shipment in last week.
Here’s the thing. I said in the [...]
