McAlister’s, a Japanese Restaurant

Today we enjoyed a meal at McAlister’s Deli restaurant.  The food was excellent but I noticed two things:
1) The serving size was small*
2) The price was high
Because of this, I concluded McAlister’s served 和食 washoku (Japanese style food!)

* As with many restaurants in Japan, the serving size is really just about about right by the [...]

Harvey’s New iPhone App: Giongo – Gitaigo

Harvey from JapanNewbie.com fame just released (that is, Apple approved it!) a new iPhone / iPod Touch app:

So you’ve learned the basics and you can carry a conversation with the best of them, but can you say “Pow” or ” Boom!” or “Shhhkkkoilllltiitnnn” in Japanese? (I made up the last one)

Beat my What?! Google does a Number on Washington

“When you beat my pitch, young gentlemen, I’ll try again.”
Yesterday, while reading up on Washington I came across the story of George Washington out-throwing all others in a throwing contest.  Well, wanting a little more context than the book was giving, I decided to Google, “When you beat my pitch, young gentlemen, I’ll try again.”
Go [...]

New Nintendo DSi

The Nintendo DS (lite) has been a welcomed toy, I mean tool for Japanese language learners.

It sports two video cameras, a smaller frame, bigger screens, an SD card slot, [...]

Reason #621 Why Online Japanese Translators make for Excellent Blog-Post Fodder

I  just received an email from someone asking a question on Youtube. Not unusual but he went to the trouble of translating his English thoughts into Japanese using… an online translator.
I won’t copy all what he wrote–since it was a private message (and a good question)–but the first line in the Japanese ‘translation’ was screaming, [...]

I’m not sure if the correct terminology is a Media Center TV or a PC Driven Media Player (on your TV) or…, but I would like to basically have all my DVDs and CDs on a harddrive and access them with a remote through a menu on my TV.
My requirements are:

A nice clean GUI

Megumi Jo Boutwell 無事に産まれました

Megumi Jo Boutwell

Megumi was born July 15th, 2008. Makoto is officially a big brother now.
The morning started at 6AM with Makoto asking, “Mama doko?” “At the hospital,” I replied sleepily. Makoto said, “Hosptl iku.” “After we eat and have a shower” was the final word repeated many times to the final command [...]

Yumi in the Hospital

Yumi checked into the hospital earlier today for the c-section tomorrow. Leaving the hospital room was pretty easy. All we had to do was to tell Makoto, “Drive! Car!” However, in the parking lot, Makoto realized mommy wasn’t with us. “Mama wa?” “Mama doko?”
We managed to get home with a [...]
