Congratulations on the nice present!

>>initial thoughts were …… umm what to do

:) the Jump key is ジャンプ. It is found to the left of the keyboard mini-screen. Also you may not know but you to get to many of the dictionaries at the top, you press the button twice. For example, to get to the Kenkyusha J-E, you press the 英和活用/新和英大 button twice.

>>the japanese speaking

That is ONLY in the J-J unfortunately. But you can easily, hit the ジャンプ button, highlight the word you want to hear, jump to the J-J dictionary, and then press the sound.

>>using the dictionary to decipher the dictionary

Very good. You may want to make a list of the buttons until you get used to them. Knowing simple dictionary kanji like 英 for English, 和 for Japanese, and the katakana words will help a lot.

I've posted a few newish posts here about the GP9700. Check out the 電子辞書 category for a list of posts.

I just received the XD-GP9700 for my birthday (was a surprise gift so not sure where it was purchased from)
initial thoughts were ...... umm what to do , as im at a basic/intermediate level and it doesnt come with english instructions.
Having used some of the help from this site (thanks!) and the white rabbit 9600 instructions ive managed to get it working in a basic fashion, though Im probably using 5% of it I reckon.

The backlight is great, cant find the jump function yet or the japanese speaking (found the english one OK though) so cant comment on them at the moment, but overall it works very well, recognises my attempts at kanji and has helped a lot already with this when I have been trying to decipher sentences.

What I am actually doing at the moment is, using the dictionary to decipher the dictionary hehe, I have taken various photos of the screen / keyboard and im slowly deciphering what they all say so I can understand how to use the device better.

I'm sure they are working on it (just like the iPhone). This is from Engadget's blog:
Talking about whether the Kindle was built to work on non-CDMA networks (read: networks other than Sprint). Bezo said: "we're gonna -- we need to be thinking globally about the device, which we are." He almost slipped there and said "We're gonna launch internationally," but caught himself.

Hi Michael,

Sorry I took so long to reply!

Well, if it is to visit relatives, probably early on (under 6 months) would be easiest. But if it is to just travel, I would wait until after the terrible twos if possible. Older children can be 'bribed' by Nintendo DSs, DVD players, Comic books, etc, but two year olds are more fickle. :)

Makoto is two and a half now.

The GP9700 actually does let you write kanji on the main panel. You can do it in the 漢字源　from option B (...大きな手書き入力から...), which is accessible by pressing the メニュー button, then go to the 国語系 category, Press 'C' for 漢字源, then choose option 'B', the one I mentioned above. It then opens the big writing square for the main panel. Hope that helps!
